The Bard
Episode 1: The Giant Slayer
A group of 3 adventures, a male paladin, a female elf wizard and a male ranger head south following the road, a paladin named Lazarus speeds his walk and tell the others:
- Make haste, we must reach the kingdom as fast as we can.
The wizard sighs and the whole group starts running with an unusual speed, following the road.
The road passes thru a series of hills and after running for a while they realise that there is humanoid figure further up the road. The paladin says:
- Nothing will hold us back.
As they get closer to the humanoid creature they realise that it is actually a giant. The giant as he notices the group charging towards his direction raises his gigantic club and stares at the party, the paladin remains fearless and says:
-Not even a giant!
The paladin charges at the giant smiting the creature with the power of light. The creature steps back and screams.
-You will pay.
As the paladin jumps over and hits the giant again, more giants appear from behind the hills. They charge towards the group that gets intimidated by their presence. One of the giants hit the paladin with his club. Lazarus is tossed away by the impact of the blow and rolls over a fair distance. Every member of the group starts retreating and Lazarus realises that he has no choice but do the same. He retreats in deep anger and shame still hurt from the giants blow.
The group arrives at the Anvil Fire Inn where they see that everyone is celebrating and drinking. The elf wizard asks:
- Hey, why is everyone celebrating?
A person in the crowd rises from his seat and says:
- Because of the bard, the giant slayer. He became rich by killing giants and he is shouting us all a round.
The wizard smiles and anxiously asks:
- A giant slayer you say? Where is he?
The man in the crowd points at a table where there is drow with his head on the table, he seems to be exhausted. The wizard pokes the paladin and says:
- Go talk to him.
The paladin stares at the bard with a suspicious face and tells the wizard:
- There is no way that bard is able to take a giant down, he is skinny, he probably would die in one hit. Plus, he doesn’t seem to be in good shape. It’s impossible he would be able to deal with those giants.
The wizard puts her hand on her head and says:
- Ok then, do you have a better idea? You keep telling me to ‘make haste’, if we take the other way, that could take us almost a week and I do value my time.
The paladin stares at the bard for a bit.
- Ok, but you are coming with me when I ask him.
They approach and the bard remains still, not looking at the environment around him. The paladin then asks:
- Are you the giant slayer that everyone is talking about?
The bard remains with his head on the table and says:
- What makes you think that?
The female wizard then says:
- That guy told us you were.
As the bard hears the wizard’s voice he raises his head and gives a smile to her.
- Oh yes, ah, I am the giant slayer.
The paladin gets a bit upset and says:
- How could you ever kill a giant? You look weak and as far as I know bards can’t fight that well.
The bard gives the paladin a grim smile and says:
- You can believe whatever you want paladin, I have enough wealth to live like a king now thanks to those giants. I doubt you have anything that would interest me so leave me be, the lady is welcome to stay and have a drink at my table.
The paladin’s eyes demonstrate anger as the wizard giggles a bit but remains standing. Not long after, the barman approaches and the bard says:
- Hey, ah, get the lady a drink on me.
The barman seems a bit tired and tells the bard:
- Sure sir, as soon as you pay your current bill.
The bard says:
- Sure, how much do I owe you.
The bartender whispers on the bard’s ear and then goes back to the bar, the bard remains staring blankly into nothing and seems awfully frightened. He then looks down and remains still for a while until he says:
- Could you excuse me for a moment?
He walks to the barman and says:
- That is not possible, it can’t possibly be that much.
Barman:
- Look, you paid a free round for everyone and I got my finest bottles for them.
The Bard says:
- You gave your finest drinks to them? Even to that half-orc right there?
Barman:
- Yes, why not? You said you had enough money for everyone.
Bard:
- That orc wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between piss and ale. I can’t believe you did this. But drinks alone could never cost that much!
Barman:
- You are forgetting about the rooms you rented for the girls.
The bard looks down and says:
- Where is the bill?
The barman hand it to him. The bard takes the bill from the barman’s hand and starts to look at it with caution, after a while he says:
- Hey wait a second what the hell is all this food? I don’t recall eating anything!
Barman:
- Your friend, Pina has been here eating non-stop since u arrived.
Bard speaks slowly:
- There is no way she could ever eat…
Barman interrupts:
- Ask her.
The bard puts his hand on his head and closes his eyes as if he would like the moment to go away. The wizard gets close and says:
- So, can we talk for a little while.
The bard says:
- I will be more than willing to talk to you in a few moments, but first there is something I must do. Please excuse me for a second.
Wizard:
- Sure…
The bard walks over to the table where there is a halfling eating a pig. He drags the little female halfling by the hand and takes her to a more private place of the inn. After he gets there he puts her against the wall and says:
- Tell me you didn’t have 17 meals! It is impossible for a person of your size to eat that much in such a short time.
Pina:
- Of course I didn’t!
Bard says relieved:
- Then, why did the barman said you did?
Pina:
- Well I had 13 meals, the other 4 I gave to some nice people that seemed as if they were in need.
The bard closes his eyes and releases Pina. He remains silent for some seconds and says:
- We can’t afford the bill.
Pina:
- I am sure there are some ways out of this one.
Bard:
- None of which I would be pleased to do.
Pina:
- Well we will have to do something, so just do something already.
The bard puts his hand on his face and gives a drawn out breath. The paladin appears and says:
- So, can you take down giants or not?
The bard remains silent for a while and then says:
- Nothing in this life is free, remember that.
The paladin puts his hand in one of his pockets, Pina looks at him while he does so.
Lazarus:
- How much do you want?
Bard:
Just pay my bill and all will be fine.
Lazarus laughs a bit and says:
- Can’t handle your bill at a tavern? Seems as your wealth is way over estimated. Ok then, I will speak with the barkeep.
The paladin moves out for a few seconds then moves back in with a scared expression on his face, he stays quiet for a moment and says:
- How did you manage to waste all that money, in a tavern such as this?
The bard says:
- I have my reasons, it’s not my fault that a person such as yourself doesn’t understand how enjoyable lust can be. Just do it and I will get rid of the giants.
Lazarus:
- I will not pay that bill, the best I can do is split it with you and I will demand to see some work done.
Bard:
- Can you kill one giant?
Lazarus:
- I believe so.
Bard:
- If we are splitting the bill, I will want you to kill one giant at least.
Lazarus:
- Consider that a deal then. I will wait for you at the tavern.
The paladin goes back to his table and sits down. The bard stays and says:
- Keep them busy when we get there, I will deal with the giants, perhaps it would be best if you did not approach until there is only one giant left.
Pina:
- You are the boss, as long as you keep leading me to fortune I will be there.
Pina remains silent for a while then grabs the bard hands and says:
- But, I could be there always if…
Bard interrupts:
- I told you, I don’t mind tiny girls but this is just ridiculous!
She lets go of his hand with a slightly angry expression on her face.
As they go back to the tavern’s main room, the bard directs himself to the wizard and says:
- Perhaps we could have one drink now? Maybe chat a little bit?
The wizard replies:
- Well, I just want to go home, I want to get this over with. Lazarus said we have an arrangement so… could we go soon please? I can’t wait to meditate at home.
The bard gives a fake smile and walks over to the bar. The paladin looks at the scene and approaches him, as the others start to stand up and move out. The halfling goes back to her table and eats her food absurdly fast.
As they all move out of the bar the paladin says:
- Make haste, we wasted enough time here.
The whole group start running fast, following the road again. The bard manages to stay slightly in front of the others; the wizard looks at the bard then asks Pina that is by her side:
- How did the bard slay the giants? Seems as you are close to him.
Pina chokes a bit, seems as she is still chewing something.
- He approaches silently behind the giants, then strikes them down before they even notice his presence, his mighty blows nearly kill the giants instantly not giving them time to outnumber him.
The wizard pictures the scene as she speaks. The paladin laughs and says:
- I think he just sneaks behind them and gets their money while they were sleeping, then runs off without them noticing that he was ever there.
Pina:
- Well, since you weren’t there I don’t think you have any right to disagree.
Bard:
- Here is where you guys stay, I will deal with them and leave one for you guys.
Paladin:
- I would like to see you killing them actually.
Bard:
- I need to use my stealth to be effective, you would just get in the way.
The paladin grunts and finds a rock to sit on, as the bard moves on and says with a smile:
- I also wouldn’t want the ladies to be hurt as well.
As the bard approaches the giant’s camp he moves with caution and silence, seeking shelter amongst some big rocks near a hill. He looks at them and realises that they are already distracted. There are four giants, two are sleeping and two are awake, one is looking at the road and the other is close to the hill. The bard looks around and picks up a rock with a smile on his face, he looks back at the giants and tosses the rock at the hill close to where a giant is; it bounces back and hits the back of the head of the other giants. The giant looks back angrily and says:
- Why did you toss that rock at me?
The other giant says:
- I didn’t!
-Then who did?
The giant returns to watching the road when he hears a voice coming from behind him saying:
- Idiot!
He stands up get his club and says:
- That is it, you are going to die now!
They start to fight as the bard watches from behind the rock, the two other giants are awaken by the fight, one of them then says:
- Stop it!
A voice just like his says:
- I was the one that tossed the rock you idiots!
The giant says:
-I didn’t say that! Wait, Don’t!
The three giants start to fight and their fight gets intense, the fourth giant stands up and tries to stop them saying:
- Whoever tossed that rock will pay for this!
After the fight ends, two giants are left standing and a voice from their direction says:
- I was the one who tossed the rock!
The fourth giant says:
- It’s your fault they are all dead!
The fourth giant kills the other one, leaving only one giant. The bard smiles and goes back to the camp where the others are waiting. He says:
- Ok, there is just one left go do your part.
The paladin looks amazed and says:
- How did you manage to kill them so fast? That’s impossible!
The bard:
- I did my part of the bargain, now you do yours.
The group moves towards the last giant and when they get there the giant looks at them with rage. The paladin looks at the corpses of the other giants and says:
- They were killed with a blunt weapon, and a big one at that. There are no marks from blades so, how can you explain that bard?
The bard gasps and then says:
- Just do your part of the deal and finish that one off.
Lazarus:
- What if I refuse?
The bard starts to get desperate and says:
- You said you would do it, you have to! Do it now!
The giant hearing both of them arguing rushes towards the bard with his club and says:
- It was all your fault!
The giant hits the bard with his giant club and the bard is thrown far, once he hits the ground he remains still. The giant start to move towards the bard to hit him again and as he gets closer, Pina jumps as high as the giants neck and slashes his throat. The giant falls moaning and the rogue rushes towards the bard screaming:
- Lamarca, wake up! Please wake up!
Lamarca wakes up still stunned by the blow and says:
- Just the check please.
Then falls unconscious again. The paladin laughs a bit and says:
- So, in the end, the giant slayer is actually Pina, hahaha. The bard couldn’t last one blow.
Pina goes towards the paladin and says:
- You were suppose to kill the last one, You didn’t fulfil the last part of our agreement.
The paladin ponders and says:
- I suppose you’re right, I am sorry little one, I just got a bit curious with the whole situation that is all.
Pina smiles and says:
- I should get an extra reward from this, since I had to kill the last giant.
Lazarus:
-Indeed you should, but unfortunately I can’t afford to pay you at the moment.
Pina says:
- You could start by helping me stabilize his wounds.
The paladin gives Pina a potion and says:
- I am sorry, I don’t have time for this, I have to reach the city as soon as possible. This potion should take care of his wounds.
Pina says:
- Great well, I have to take the bard back to the inn so he can rest and recover.
Pina hugs the paladin. He hugs her back and says:
- Travel well little one.
The paladin arrives at the city and finds his way to the church where he is welcomed by three priests:
High priest:
- Finally you arrived! I suppose you have the royal bands with you of course?
Lazarus:
- I sure do I kept it safe on my…
Lazarus realises that the bag where he kept the bands was no longer there. He starts searching the rest of his body and as he searches his desperation increases and he claims.
- How is that possible?
The priest says:
- Where is the bands? You were supposed to keep those bands safe and guard them with your life if you had to.
Lazarus says:
- That rogue..
With the flashback of Pina’s hug, he realises her true intentions.
Lazarus then says:
- A bard and a rogue stole it from me while I was distracted, I will return it to you, I promise.
Priest:
- You’d better bring it back soon, if the bands are not here by the time of the wedding, you will leave us no choice but to…
Lazarus:
- I will get them, nothing will stop me from retrieving them, I am sorry I failed you. I must take my leave.
High priest:
- Farewell.
The paladin heads to a stable where he quickly gets a horse and runs out in full speed saying:
- I will punish the both of you for your sins and my shame.
The bard and the rogue walk at the road, the bard is still in pain and distracted, the rogue behind him gets the bag and opens it. She then smiles, then giggles a bit, the bard asks:
-What are you laughing about?
Pina hides the bag and says:
- Nothing, I was just thinking about the payment.
Lamarca seems frustrated:
- The payment was a joke! Not worth my while, that’s for sure!
Pina:
- Perhaps not your while.
Lamarca asks:
- What’s that suppose to mean?
Pina:
- Nothing…
They keep walking along the road.
